“Thirsty for Vengeance against the cruel slap gotten from Discrimination”

The title above makes reference to a successful film named “The Merchant of Venice”. “The Merchant of Venice” is another of the masterpieces created by the famous writer, Shakespeare.

Furthermore, it is an interesting film which is about how discriminated by society Jewish people was in Venice, in the XVI century. Through this film you will be witness of how thirsty for vengeance a human being can be due to the big pain suffered by discrimination. Does human being’s thirst for vengeance have limits?

Moreover, while you are watching this film you will be capable to realize what the unfair restrictions that Jewish people were submitted to were and also, what they had to do to survive in a city which main religion was “Christianity”.

On the other hand, the film setting was very well prepared; the music and landscapes chosen to be used in this film were wonderful. Then, the atmosphere that this film is able to create; it will make you live an experience, that, I am sure, you have never lived before.

Another and highly important ingredient is the actors that made this incredible film possible. They did an excellent job. In my humble opinion the actors that worked and were part of “The Merchant of Venice” are some of the best actors of Hollywood. One of them is Al Pacino as Shylock (a Jewish man who is moneylender), and the other one is Jeremy Irons as Antonio (a Christian’s Venice that asked Shylock for money to help his best friend Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes)).

Even though, the role that the actresses, like Lynn Collins as Portia (a beautiful and intelligent woman that Bassanio fall in love with), Heather Goldenhersh as Nerissa (a woman who Portia trust the most and who is also Portia’s lady in waiting), and Zuleikha Robinson as Jessica (a lady who is Shylock’s daughter), played in this film has to do with the film epoch; I think that the actresses’ actuation was weak. They did not act bad but not well either. The actresses’ actuation could have been much better. The thing is that the actresses do not get close to the heart of the people who attend this film by their actuations as actors do.

Finally, if you want to see an interesting film instead of a boring and superficial one you should see “The Merchant of Venice” by Shakespeare. While and after watching this movie it will be hard for you to believe how big human stupidity could be and it will make you reflect about how absurd discrimination was, have been and is. Therefore, a film like “The Merchant of Venice” can not go unnoticed in front of your eyes; it will enrich your soul to make you a better human being.

About the “Letter to Sir Walter Raleigh”…

After reading “The Letter to Sir Walter Raleigh” many times I still feel confused. Even though, the English words that were used in those times are very similar to the ones that are used now, the way this letter is written is hard to understand. Therefore, it was really exhausted to read this letter to me.

Before giving my opinion, let me tell you that I am not sure if I will be right or not. Spencer chose to write about King Arthur because he was and has been an important and admirable character across time.

Moreover, the characteristics that Spencer was trying to emphasize through his characters are “Holiness” which is represented by the Knight of the Red Crosse, “Temperance” by Sir Gyon and “Chastity” by Lady Knight.

Finally, I think that Spencer wrote this kind of letter to express the feelings and thoughts that he could not due to that epoch.

What Do Women Love the Most?

First of all, if we consider the traditional thoughts of the epoch the woman who is the main character in “The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale” lived; she behaved in a brave but, at the same time, rebel way too. She felt free to listen to her heart and do what she wanted. Moreover, she did not care the later consequences this would be. Even though, this woman’s behavior caused astonishment in the population, it reflected the most repressive women’s desires at those times.

Nowadays, women do not have different needs from the ones who lived in the past. Women need to be loved, respected and admired not only for men but for women too. They also want to feel free to express themselves and do what they think it is good for their lives without being afraid to be criticized by society.

Why do you think Chaucer called this poem "truth"?

Chaucer calls this poem truth to show us that what we are living it is not true but a big lie.

What does he mean by "for greed entails hate and social climbing uncertainty? How does it apply to the present world?

The sentence above means the human beings's big but superficial desire for more and more everything; it does not matter what is and the consequences that this has. Nowadays, materialism overcomes and dazzles us with its technology which builds an enormous wall in front of us to we can not see beyond superficial stuff. If we would just stop for a moment to appreciate and realize the wonderful gift that life is we will be happy and grateful to God for being alive.

What are the religious implications of this poem?

The religious implications of this poem are to reflect on what kind of life we are living and appreciate what is really important as our spiritual richness and to love God and one’s neighbor over everything.

How do you feel after reading it? Does it make sense to you, to your life?

After reading this poem I reflected a lot on life and on my life. I feel happy to be alive with the family that God has given me but I feel sad by the priorities of the world where I live now. On the other hand, I know life is not easy but we have to learn from it and make a change to live in harmony with God, ourselves and life. We have to let apart all the material things that separate us to build a better world together.

"Literature is the way that writers express their ideas and feelings through language. It also shows the social context of a specific time"

I disagree with the quotation above due to, I think, Literature is much more than what is mentioned there. It is true that writers play an important role in literature but, what about readers?
According to the different feelings, thoughts, experiences, etc. that, as writers as readers and every human being in the world have had is their unique way of seeing and face things. Past experiences feed our spirit to become ourselves in what we are in the present.
As a result, people as such are subjective and, therefore, their way of appreciating things too.
Finally, don’t forget that every person is a universe by itself which no you neither I will never know.
